This is a trip I will never forget. The Arctic and its mysterious beauty are enchanting and deeply memorable and I would like you to try them too! For this trip, your base will be Tromsø, the largest city in Northern Norway but this itinerary is built around the big bucket-list moments: chasing the Northern Lights, meeting reindeer, visiting Sami camps. The intense excursions are balanced with traditional meals and a comfortable Airbnb base to come back to each night. Here's how the trip comes together!

You decide how many days you want to spend in Tromsø but you will need at least three days to enjoy the Arctic experiences illustrated in this article. Where to Stay in Tromsø
An Airbnb within walking distance of the city centre is the easiest way to base yourself here. The flat I stayed in was warm and welcoming, fully stocked with everything needed for the trip — including, crucially in Arctic weather, a proper washing machine and dryer for drying out wet winter gear. The host was responsive and helpful throughout, which made settling in for a few days effortless.

Three experiences here go beyond sightseeing and into what actually makes this trip memorable.
Start with the Tromsø City Walking Tour with Sámi History, which reframes the whole city. Tromsø's Sámi roots run deep, and a guided tour pulls that context into the present. Three hours is enough to properly absorb the stories without tiring yourself out before the night's main event.
That main event is the Northern Lights Tour, arguably the whole reason for the trip. Aurora chasers know the conditions, know where to position you, and know when it's worth holding out versus heading home. You could try hunting alone, but a guide dramatically improves your odds, and tours that can stretch as late as 02:00 signal a genuine commitment to finding the lights rather than just filling a scheduled slot. Be prepared for very cold temperatures. You can warm up in the bus or in front of the fire the tour guides will start in the spot decided as a camp for the event. The emotional core of the trip, though, is the Tromsø Arctic Reindeer and Sami lunch trip. Feeding reindeer in the winter landscape, then sitting down to a traditional Sámi lunch together, is intimate in a way the other activities aren't. The reindeer soup in particular ties the whole experience together; what I learned in this trip is that the Sami people are deeply intertwined with the life of their reindeer and they respect them. For instance, they wait until the reindeer are very old before cooking them in their meals and they use every inch of them. Beyond the experience itself, you're directly supporting Sámi culture and livelihoods by taking part. Check this reel for a feel of the experience!
The Arctic Fjords Tour to Kvaløya is the scenic jackpot of the trip. Kvaløya's dramatic cliffs and fjords are exactly why people describe the Arctic as stunning, and letting a guide tour do the navigating means you get the scenery without driving yourself through it. A panoramic lunch is included to keep you comfortable throughout, and at five hours, it's long enough to properly see and feel the landscape without tipping into tour fatigue.
Taken together, this is a well-paced few days which will allow you to make the most of your long weekend in the Arctic. There are various experiences you can choose from but the ones I shared here, are the ones I personally took and really enjoyed.

Where to Eat in Tromsø
Raketten Bar & Pølse is where locals actually go. It ia a easy kiosk on the high street of Tromsø serving Norwegian reindeer sausage done properly. It's the kind of place Tromsø residents grab breakfast, and it's a far better start to the day than a generic café before heading into a walking tour or excursion.
Hard Rock Cafe Tromsø isn't fine dining, but after a day of excursions, rock-themed nostalgia and burgers hit exactly the right note. This is a casual, warm stop, with playful memorabilia lining the walls.
Biffhuset Skarven is the upscale steakhouse move, best saved for before a Northern Lights hunt: good meat, Arctic views, and a warm space built to get you ready for your next adventure!
Tøllefsenhjørnet is a cosy, central café for easing into a final morning. Warm coffee, pastries, no rush, and a nice buffer before heading out to meet the reindeer.
Olga's Gastrobar, on Storgata, is the perfect final stop for your long weekend in the Arctic: modern Nordic cuisine, revisited in a creative way. In this restaurant, you will try what contemporary Tromsø cuisine really tastes like.

Tromsø Outdoor AS is the unglamorous but essential first stop: proper Arctic gear: snowsuit, insulated gloves, and spike-soled boots for the ice. Local gear shops know their stuff better than generic rental counters, and booking ahead means you're not scrambling the morning of your fjord tour.
